Projective Space

Sited within an old industrial building, the scheme frames glimpsed views of the brick walls and large windows of the original structure. Some of these elements are left in a raw state to more explicitly reveal the history of the building, while others are curated with white paint or a concrete finish to establish a resonance with the inserted elements of the new design. Ambiguously, new concrete elements appear as part of the industrial history of the building, while some original surfaces are similarly refinished to appear new.

The open-plan space can be divided into rooms by doors concealed in volumes and planes, finished variously with timber cladding, concrete, or a white paint finish. Combined with carefully placed mirrors and shadow gaps, these elements give the impression of a single open space rather than rooms—but deny any views of the whole space, to create a sense of spaciousness.
