Case Study House #154
The ‘site’ of this project—a modern, three-bedroom, three-storey house—is the building envelope of a two-bedroom, two-storey dwelling constructed in the Victorian era. The project is conceived in the spirit of the Case Study Houses commissioned by Arts and Architecture magazine in the mid-twentieth century in response to the post-World War II United States housing boom. Case Study House #154 is similarly posited as a model for inexpensive and efficient modern homes in London’s twenty-first century housing boom. The design utilizes a vocabulary of sculptural architectural moves developed through numerous projects of a similar or much larger scale. Realized as a renovation, the case study is inherently scaled to the urban grain of London, and so could be reconstructed as a single new-build on an in-fill site, or repeated in different permutations as multi-unit housing.
